los amigos our lodges

We start early with a 45-minute shuttle to the bustling port of Laberinto on the Madre de Dios River.

The River Journey: As we travel 4.5 hours upriver, you will see the gold mining operations on the right bank. Your guide will explain the environmental impact and why protecting the primary rainforest on the left bank is crucial. From the boat, we’ll scan for:

  • River Birds: Cocoi & Capped Heron, American Wood Stork, Pied Lapwing, and Sand-colored Nighthawk.
  • Kingfishers: Amazon & Ringed Kingfisher.
  • Flyovers: Great Black Hawk, King Vulture, Macaws, and White-throated Toucans.

Arrival: We arrive at Los Amigos in time for lunch, settle into our cabins, and freshen up.

Overnight: Los Amigos Research Station.

We have three full days to explore the trails, lakes, and forests around the lodge.

Primate Search: We will explore quiet trails looking for primates. This region is home to 11 species, including:

  • Moustached Emperor & Weddell’s Saddleback Tamarins.
  • The recently described Toppin’s Brown Titi Monkey.
  • Peruvian Spider Monkey & Bolivian Squirrel Monkey.
  • Gray’s Bald-faced Saki Monkey (rarely seen).

Cocha Lobo (Oxbow Lake): We will take a full-day trip to Cocha Lobo, paddling on a floating platform. Targets include:

  • Giant Otter families.
  • The bizarre Hoatzin.
  • Peruvian Black Spider Monkeys and Capuchins.

Mammals & Forest: We’ll explore the terra firme forest (upland) around Brazil nut trees, searching for:

  • Pale-winged Trumpeter & Pavonine Quetzal.
  • Mammals: Brazilian Tapir, Collared & White-lipped Peccary, and felines like Ocelot or Jaguar.
  • We may also spot Red Brocket Deer or Forest Rabbit.

Sunset Lookout: One evening, we will hike to a cliff lookout to watch roosting flights of Parrots and Macaws as the sun sets.

Overnight: Los Amigos Research Station.

We leave the station early by boat for Puerto Maldonado.

River & Highway Birding: As we navigate the river and transfer via highway to the airport, we’ll look for any species missed, such as:

  • Jabiru, Black Skimmers, Red-and-green Macaws, and White-tailed Kites.
  • Red-breasted Blackbirds and Southern Lapwings along the highway.

Departure: Once we reach Puerto Maldonado, we ensure you board your return flight to Cusco or Lima safely.

End of Tour.
